ALFONSO XII (1874-1885). 5 pesetas. (Ar. 25.04g /37mm). 1882 *18-82. MadridMSM. (Cal-2019-51). Uncirculated. Original Luster . Magnificent very rare specimen in this precious quality.

The reign of Alfonso XII, and in general the entire period that we know as the Restoration, is a decisive moment for the consolidation of the Peseta as the country's monetary unit. And it is that, with the exceptions of the Napoleonic Peseta of Catalonia at the beginning of the 19th century and the Elizabethan Peseta of 1836 and 1837 (framed in the context of the Carlist Wars), the denomination of Peseta continues to be relatively new at the moment. It was not until the Provisional Government when it acquired the concept of legal tender. The first Duros or 5 Pesetas minted by Alfonso XII maintain the reverse of those of 1869 to which the real crown and the Bourbon shield are added. The bust on the obverse, the work of Gregorio Sellán (main engraver of the Madrid Mint) is presented in the first years without a beard to end up being bearded from 1882 to 1885, the year of his death.

Ex Cayón Auctions 09/22/2021, Lot No. 6182.

The law of July 16, 1949 ratified the previous one of 1946 with the exception regarding the minting material used: silver was replaced by nickel. The idea of recovering the iconic hard in the image and likeness of those minted between the 16th and 19th centuries ran into the serious inconvenience of a country still in the post-war period. What the authorities did not count on was the sudden increase in the price of nickel at the beginning of the year 51, as a direct consequence of the Korean War, which caused the 1951 and 1952 minting, practically of pure nickel, to be prematurely stopped. The issues of these two years were reduced to a few copies that never circulated and that, apparently, were distributed among high-ranking members of the Franco government. We find ourselves, therefore, before one of the fewest and rarest pieces of numismatics in the Spanish State, which contrasts with the enormous production of these same pieces in 1949 and 1950. It was not until 1957 that the minting of the famous duros or 5 Pesetas but these have already been made with a notably lower diameter and weight.
