El 26 de diciembre de 1808 se publica el edicto en el que se ordena la recogida de plata tanto de iglesias como de particulares para llevar a cabo la acuñación de monedas en pleno asedio de la ciudad de Gerona por parte de las tropas napoleónicas. A pesar de la fecha que aparece en la moneda, estos ejemplares fueron acuñados ya en enero de 1809, entre el segundo y el tercer sitio de Gerona (diciembre de 1809) fecha en la que fue finalmente tomada. Precisamente fue la necesidad lo que obligo a la Junta Suprema de la Provincia a rebajar la ley de la plata y el peso de estos duros, conocidos también como "duros de planxa y (…) acuñados con el campo liso, la abreviatura de Gerona, 1808. Un duro y Fern. Vil, esto es, sin el busto de Fernando VII ni el escudo".
