ALMOHADS, Anonymous, quoting Imam Al-Mahdi. Dirham. (Ar. 1.47g/14mm). Silb (Silves) / شلب. (Vives does not cite; Medina does not cite; Gaspariño 2001b; Hohertz 594). VF. Extremely rare. We only know of two other examples, belonging to the legendary and scattered Gaspariño and Tonegawa collections.

"Silves remained a secondary city of the Almohad Empire until its capture by Alfonso Enriquez in 585 AH. When the Almohad caliph al-Mansur received news of the capture, he wasted no time in assembling an army and launching a campaign against it. After a long siege, Silves was finally recaptured. It seems clear that the Almohad coinage minted in Silves cannot be considered sporadic. The reasons why a city would be so secondary this time for coinage can, in our opinion, be one of two things: to pay the army (we know that the Almohads took the Mobile Mint with them on their military expeditions), or to celebrate the city's recapture. In either case, the minting of this coinage would have taken place in 586-7 AH. It seems more likely that it was minted in 586 AH, during the prolonged siege, but it could well have been started in 587 AH to celebrate the city's return to Islam."

ALMOHADS, Anonymous, quoting Imam Al-Mahdi. Dirham. (Ar. 1.51g/15mm). Fās (Fez) / فاس. (Hohertz 618, cataloged as RRR). Very Fine. Very rare and beautiful example; we only have record of one other example of the same type, auctioned by Soler y Llach & Martí Hervera, Auction 1085 (26/02/2015), Lot No. 371.

This coin features striking ornamental Kufic calligraphy in the Hafsid style, similar to coins attributed to Abu Hafs 'Umar al-Murtada with the mint 'Al-Hadrat al-Muminiya al-Murtadiya' (Hohertz 563). Therefore, it was possibly minted around the same time by a governor in the region.

While the typology of this piece fully coincides with the Almohad 1/8 Dirham, we believe that its excessively light weight, practically half the usual amount, could be due to its intention to circulate under a smaller denomination. In Henry Lavoix's catalogue (1891), we find a similar piece (709), considered a handus, a dirham denomination used for alms.

This rare denominator, halfway between the traditional round shape of the Quirate and the legend of the square Almohad 1/8 Dirham (Hohertz 645), contains in its design some characteristics similar to the round 1/2 Dirhams attributed by Peña Martín to Idris I (Hohertz 633 and notes).

Encapsulated by NGC MS 62 (Top Pop, best preserved specimen in the NGC census). A very rare specimen. Although the title used by this ruler, امير الغرب / Emir of the Algarve, undoubtedly refers to southern Portugal, its literal translation is "Emir of the West," in relation to the geographical position occupied by this rebellious taifa. It is currently believed that this kingdom encompassed Niebla (Labla), where its mint was located, near the present-day city of Huelva, Saltés, as well as part of the Algarve region in Portugal.
