5000 Pesetas. 11 de Junio de 1938. Sin numeración y el sello de Bradbury sobre el espacio destinado a la firma del cajero. (Edifil 2023: NE35M, Pick: 92). Extraordinariamente raro y muy espectacular, en total no se conocen más de diez ejemplares y todos ellos en las fases previas a la emisión definitiva que nunca llegó a imprimirse, sin duda estamos ante el billete más icónico del siglo XX junto al de "La Dama de Elche", pero este último no tan raro como el "Fortuny". El primer intento de emitir un billete de un valor por encima del límite legal de 1000 pesetas data de 1938, durante la Guerra Civil Española, en territorio republicano. La necesidad de poner en circulación denominaciones altas fue cubriéndose mediante la puesta en emisión de los billetes de 500 y 1000 pesetas de 1928, así como las 500 pesetas de 1935 de Hernán Cortés. Sin embargo, la descontrolada inflación republicana exigía mover el listón hasta valores nunca vistos. Es por ello que el Banco de España, trasladado ya a Barcelona, encargó en Abril de 1938 la fabricación de un billete de 5000 pesetas a la casa inglesa Bradbury, Wilkinson and Cº, con la que España venía trabajando desde 1906.

El anverso de ese billete muestra un retrato del genial pintor catalán de estilo orientalista, Mariano Fortuny, pintado por él mismo hacia 1873, poco antes de morir. El reverso del billete reproduce el cuadro “La Vicaría”, pintado en 1870 por el propio Fortuny y cuyo grabado en el billete debemos al británico Edward T. Dawson.

Este ejemplar de 5000 pesetas de 1938 que mostramos procede directamente del archivo de la casa inglesa Bradbury, Wilkinson and Cº, donde servía como referencia y control.
