Refundado por la FNMT en 1990, el prestigioso premio Tomás Francisco Prieto honra al que fuera Grabador General de Casas de Moneda del Rey Carlos III a la vez que trata de promover la medalla como soporte del arte contemporáneo. Desde esa fecha y hasta la actualidad estos premios, que incluye la acuñación de una medalla, han recaído en artistas contemporáneos, españoles e iberoamericanos, de prestigio y fama universal: Eduardo Chillida fue el primero de ellos.
