El 1 de enero de 1820, se produce el llamado pronunciamiento del coronel Rafael de Riego en la población sevillana de Las Cabezas de San Juan. El detonante fue la negación de las tropas a embarcar para América, en plena efervescencia de las luchas de independencia contra la Monarquía española. El rey Fernando VII, temeroso de que la situación se propagase a otros puntos del país, se vio obligado a firmar un decreto por el que se sometía a “la voluntad general del pueblo”, y tres días más tarde juró finalmente la Constitución de Cádiz de 1812.
