This piece is the only example of an Andalusian Caliph coin with Hebrew inscriptions known to date and, therefore, the only known monetary testimony of the presence of Sephardim in the Andalusian court during the caliphate of 'Abd al-Raḥmān III. The fact that that on the same date that the specimen was minted, Ḥasday b. Šaprūṭ, (a Jewish doctor and diplomat) had a relevant role in the Caliphal court leads one to think that the appearance of the legend in Hebrew could be linked to his activity in the service of the The analysis of the transitional, Idrisid and Kharijite copies, which also contain Hebrew legends that are, therefore, precursors of the issue in question, allows us to offer a possible interpretation of the Hebrew inscription. It would be a "validation" formula that would complement the central legend of the Islamic profession of faith, corroborating the faith in the one and same God and manifesting the acceptance of Islamic power by the Sephardic community. Thus, the The specimen in question would join the very few known specimens with Hebrew legends minted in the medieval Islamic West. Given its extreme rarity, as well as the very interesting historical value it entails, we have considered it appropriate to attach to this catalog an annex with the study Complete study carried out by Dr. Almudena Ariza Armada and published in the AL-QANTARA magazine in 2009.

This curious and beautiful variant of the distribution of the IA divides the 'Shahada' into 'two parts'. The first, ('lā ilāh il/lā Allāh) is contained within the hexagram of the seal of Solomon, while the second, (Muḥammad/rasūl/Allāh) is found triangulating the first one, following the line of one of the triangles that forms the aforementioned seal.

After the death of Sulayman ben Hud, king of Zaragoza, the Taifa was divided among his 5 sons, with 'Larida' corresponding to Yusuf / يوسف, who took the title of al-Muzaffar / المظفر, also using, as stated on his coins, the surnames of Sayyid al-Dawla, Tay al-Dawla and Du al-Siyadatain. ''Of his few coins, this would be the last, since his brother Ahmad al-Muqtadir, king of Zaragoza, against whom he was in constant war, took him prisoner, reincorporating the Taifa of Lérida into his kingdom, possibly in this same year 459H, the date of his last known coins. Although some authors, based on other documents, set these events in the last four years of Ahmad's life, between 471-475H.''

Although he was the son of Abu Bakr, little is known about him from the sources. Numismatic literature records a series of Dinars minted by him in Segilmesa between the years 462-467H, while this is the only type of quirate that is known about this ruler and that was published by Benito de los Mozos (Gaspariño 2017, 83-86) and that presents the same characteristics as those issued in the name of his father.

This piece, halfway between the new Almoravid metrology and the traditional design of other periods, presents Yusuf with the title of Nasir al-Din on the reverse border and without mention of an heir, while on the obverse, we can highlight the perfection of the tiny date, fully expressing the unit and decade: سنة اربع و تسعين, a peculiarity that we do not find in any other copy.

We only have evidence of two pieces with similar characteristics. The first, the origin of its cataloging and belonging to the Tonegawa collection, was auctioned by Áureo y Calico, in volume I of the same (02/15/2024) and sold for €1,700. As a unique example, it contains the unit and the beginning of ten. While the second, auctioned by Stephen Album Rare Coins, 48 (01/18/2024), only contained the unit.

This rare divider halfway between the traditional round shape of the Quirate and the legend of the square 1/8 Almohad Dirham (Hohertz 645), contains in its design some characteristics similar to the round 1/2 Dirhams attributed by Peña Martín to Idris I (Hohertz 633 and notes).

ALMOHADS, Abd al-Mumin ibn Ali. Dirham in 1/2 Dirham type. (Ar. 1.50g/12mm). S/D. (Brethes 1050; Hazard 1067; Medina p443, note 2; Hohertz 548b). Variant with Alif and Lam joined at the top on the last line of the obverse. VF. Very rare.

This rare piece in the name of Abd al-Mumin, although for unknown reasons, most likely belongs to a rare series of coins that include 3 different metric units minted under a single design, the same being the usual one on the 1/2 Dirham.
Although we also consider it remarkable the existence of a small ornament in the form of a 'sin' or 'shadda' ending in a roundel and underlined, over the end of the word God / لله, in the upper part of the obverse. This type of ornament or isolated letters are quite typical in the Dirhams in the name of Al-Madhi, but not in those of Abd al-Mumin.
