ALMOHADES, Abu Hafs `Umar Al-Murtada. Dinar. (Aug. 4.52g/29mm) 646-665H. Sabta (Ceuta). (Vives 2081; Hazard-525). Extremely Fine. Rare specimen, scarce in this magnificent specimen with traces of original shine.

After the deposition of al-Yanast, Ceuta returned under Almohad tutelage, once again recognizing the caliph al-Rasid, who appointed Abu Ali Ibn Jalas as governor. This clearly shows his submission to the sovereignty of Abu Zakariyya Yahya, who appears in monetary legends as the Most Noble Emir (al-amir alayall). The use of each of the monetary types in each case is a clear example of the role played by currency as a vehicle for political-religious propaganda at the service of the power that issues it. After Ibn al-Sahid was expelled after the death of Abu Zakariyya Yayha, Abu al-Qasim al-Azafi took power over the city, which would nominally recognize the Almohad caliph Abu Hafs Umar al-Murtada, even though it was in fact independent, thus coining again in Ceuta dinars of Almohad type, of very good quality and relative abundance, in relation to the economic resurgence of the city.
