CHARLES III (1759-1788). 8 Escudos. (Au. 26.92g/37mm). 1771. Lima JM. Second type of Rat Face. (Cal-2019-1926). Extremely Fine. Original luster. Beautiful tone. Slight leaf on reverse. Scarce, especially in this condition. Mexico City, Lima, Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino, Santiago de Chile, Guatemala City, Madrid, and Seville minted the famous Rat Face between 1672 and 1772. This is one of the most iconic portraits by the engraver and medalist Tomás Francisco Prieto and a significant figure in all of Spanish numismatics. These coins appear in denominations ranging from 1/2 to 8 Escudos. The Lima mint, along with the Mexico City mint, was the most prolific in terms of the number of coins minted. Furthermore, the Lima mint produced two subtypes of busts, differentiated primarily by the shape of the nose. The first type would go between 1763 and 1768 and the second between that same 1768 and 1772, the date in which the busts are unified in the so-called proper bust.
