El reinado de Alfonso XII, y en general todo el periodo que conocemos como Restauración, es un momento decisivo para la consolidación de la Peseta como unidad monetaria del país. Y es que, con las excepciones de la Peseta napoleónica de Cataluña a comienzos del siglo XIX y las isabelina de 1836 y 1837 (enmarcadas en el contexto de las Guerras Carlistas) la denominación de Peseta continúa siendo relativamente nueva en estos momentos. No fue hasta el Gobierno Provisional cuando adquiere el concepto de moneda de curso legal. Los primeros Duros o 5 Pesetas acuñados por Alfonso XII mantienen el reverso de los de 1869 a los que se les añaden la corona real y el escusón borbónico. El busto del anverso, obra de Gregorio Sellán (grabador principal de la Casa de la Moneda de Madrid) se presenta en los primero años sin barba para terminar siendo barbado desde 1882 hasta 1885, año de su muerte.
