Quizás la acuñación de este tipo de moneda no sea más que otro intento de añadir confusión, más si cabe, a la de ya por sí situación compleja que asolaba el país en los primeros años del siglo XIX. Una moneda diferente, un elemento diferenciador más entre la Cataluña en el punto de mira francés y el resto de España. De esta manera, se llevaron a cabo entre 1808 y 1814 emisiones en cobre, plata y oro. El estilo de estas acuñaciones catalanas imitaba al de las monedas emitidas en Francia durante el Consulado y todas tienen en común el escudo laureado de Barcelona en el anverso. Curiosamente, en ninguna de ellas se cita el nombre de José Napoleón ni de los Bonaparte y paradójicamente también, se acuñaron bajo el nombre de Pesetas, la denominación que unos años después pasó a ser la oficial en todo el país.
