La moneda hispana por antonomasia se acuña únicamente entre 1732 y 1772. Son, por tanto, sólo tres reyes los que tuvieron el privilegio de ordenar dicha acuñación: Felipe V, Fernando VI y Carlos III. Todos los columnarios, en sus diferentes módulos desde 1/2 a 8 reales están acuñados en las colonias americanas, siendo México la ceca más prolífica, seguido de Lima, Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino y Santiago de Chile, las más raras y escasas. El diseño de todos ellos es común; así en el anverso aparece el escudo de España a gran tamaño con corona de laurel encima y el nombre del rey en latín seguido de la leyenda “D G HISPANET IND REX”. En el reverso encontramos, quizás, el dibujo más emblemático de esta moneda: los dos globos terráqueos que representan oriente y occidente con corona real encima de ambos, debajo olas marinas y columnas coronada a ambos lados. La leyenda en latín “VTRAQUE VNVM”, ambos son uno, pretenden resaltar la unidad de los territorios españoles a cada lado del hemisferio. El canto laureado es otra de sus grandes señas de identidad. Fue, desde sus primeras acuñaciones, una moneda con vocación universal, pues era perfectamente válida en una transacción económica en cualquier rincón del planeta.
