Probablemente tras Calígula y Nerón, Domiciano fue el emperador más denostado por la historiografía clásica. Una visión que la historiografía moderna trata de, si no desmontar, al menos matizar. Y es que, aunque fue presentado como un autócrata cruel, despiadado y hasta sádico, el pueblo romano tenía pocas razones para odiarle; no así el Senado, pero ese es otro tema. Tras su muerte sufrió la llamada Damnatio Memoriae o lo que es lo mismo borrar cualquier huella de su paso por el gobierno de Roma que incluía entre otras acciones el derribo de estatuas o la eliminación de toda imagen o inscripciones suyas en espacios públicos tanto en Roma como en el Imperio. Con él se extingue la dinastía Flavia, la más corta de la Historia de Roma cuya duración fue sólo de 27 años.
