Desde Publio Servilio Prisco, primer miembro de la gens que obtuvo el consulado en el 495 a.C. hasta Quintus Servilio en el 189 a.C. esta familia ocupó un lugar predominante en la escena política romana. Cuenta la tradición que esta gens fue una de las pertenecientes a Alba Longa y que fue trasladada a Roma por Tulio Hostilio convirtiéndose en una de las denominadas minores gentes.
