Esta orden creada por Carlos IV a instancia de su esposa, la reina María Luisa, tenía por objetivo “ser un modo más de mostrar su benevolencia a las personas nobles de su sexo que se distinguieren por sus servicios, prendas y calidades". Se estableció en treinta el número de Damas de la Orden, excluyendo a la propia Reina y a las mujeres de su familia. Dicha distinción lleva anexo el tratamiento de Excelencia o Excelentísima o Excelentísima Señora.
