El fundador de la dinastía Flavia tenía tras de sí, y a sus sesenta años, una brillante carrera militar que fue la que le impulsó a ser proclamado emperador. Su mandato, de apenas diez años, supuso volver a poner cierto orden en las finanzas públicas, establecer la paz en las fronteras así como en iniciar grandes obras públicas (tras el incendio que arrasó Roma) entre las que destaca la construcción del archiconocido Coliseo Romano.
En sus monedas aparecen retratos que son, en lo artístico, una continuidad de la línea establecida por Galba: realismo sin concesiones, trazos severos y ausencia de adornos superfluos. Es de resaltar el cuidado en la representación de los peinados, tanto en los del emperador, de cabeza sólida, como en los de su esposa Flavia Domitila, quien a pesar de su muy humilde origen acabó teniendo el título póstumo de Augusta.
