Junto a Galba, Vespasiano y Otón, Vitelio es el cuarto emperador, tercero por orden cronológico, del conocido año de los cuatro emperadores (año 69 d.C.) y aunque fue nombrado emperador por las legiones de la Germania Inferior que se negaban a reconocer a Galba no fue hasta el fallecimiento de éste y de Otón cuando fue oficialmente reconocido como emperador. Su mandato duró desde el 17 de abril de 69 d.C. hasta el 22 de diciembre de ese mismo año. Fue el primer emperador que añadió el "cognomen" honorífico de Germánico sin incluir el de César.
Destacó por una carrera militar exitosa y también un tanto atípica, después del consulado en 57 d.C. fue nombrado sacerdote Arvale y luego en el año 60 d.C. fue nombrado procónsul de África; su carrera militar tuvo un punto de inflexión con el inesperado nombramiento por Galba como comandante del ejército de la Germania Inferior.
