Tomado más como medalla que como moneda en sus orígenes, es a partir de los primeros años del siglo XVI cuando el Táler despega con éxito, primero en los mercados alemanes y posteriormente en los internacionales. Jugó un papel de gran calado en el desarrollo del Sacro Imperio Romano Germánico y se “enfrentó” directamente, en los primeros años del reinado de Carlos V, con en el todopoderoso Florín de oro, saliendo victorioso. Fue esencial como elemento unificador de territorios, sirva el ejemplo el papel jugado en la cohesión de los dominios de Fernando I. Además, dado su gran módulo se convirtió en un elemento propagandístico de primer orden. Por este motivo, entre otros, el Táler goza de una extraordinaria y cuidada calidad artística y estilística. Este sobresaliente ejemplar se acuña siendo maestro de la ceca tirolesa de Hall Johann Sebastian Fenner y la pieza es obra del grabador Anton König von Paumbshausen, que consigue un soberbio retrato de Leopoldo I, rey austriaco y padre del conocido por estos lares como Carlos III, el Pretendiente.
