La prematura muerte por tuberculosis de Alfonso XII abrió un periodo de regencia que en el plano numismático se reflejó en una continuidad de los tipos, sin modificaciones. Se siguió usando para las 5 Pesetas las acuñaciones de 1885 a las que se añadió en la estrella la fecha del 87, año real de su acuñación. En agosto de ese mismo año, 1887, se aprueban las primeras monedas a nombre del nuevo rey, niño aún, y que verían la luz un año después en 1888 y en forma del popular "pelón".
