Sin la fama de Emérita Augusta, en la Lusitania, o Tarraco en la Tarraconense, ejemplo de grandes urbes en la península en la época de Augusto, la Córdoba romana se convirtió en la capital de provincia más meridional de la Península Ibérica. Respecto a las acuñaciones, sestercios y ases comparten reversos con coronas laureadas mostrando en su interior la leyenda Colonia Patricia, nombre que recibe en estos momentos la ciudad tras la denominación latina de Cordvba. Aunque en teoría dupondios y sestercios debían ser fabricados en oricalco, lo cierto es que terminaron fabricándose también bronce con la particularidad de tener un peso notablemente mayor a lo habitual.
