Entre 1808 y 1811 se emitieron monedas en diferentes cecas americanas con el llamado busto imaginario. De entre todas estas acuñaciones, quizás la más popular y conocida sea la acuñada en México. La premura de contar para el día de la proclamación con las nuevas acuñaciones que reflejaran el rostro de Fernando VII y ante la insistencia del Virrey Iturrigaray de dar cumplimiento a lo exigido por la Junta Suprema de Sevilla, no quedó otro camino que crear de la nada o bien tomando como referencia alguna estampa de la época, un rostro para estas acuñaciones. El busto de Fernando VII de México siguió fielmente en cuanto a estética el modelo de Carlos IV, si bien se modificó la cara para borrar el parecido con su padre. Se le atribuye a Fernando Gordillo la autoría del cuño del nuevo retrato.
