Aunque los conocemos desde tiempos anteriores a Felipe V y perduran en el tiempo hasta el reinado de Isabel II, son en las monedas de Carlos IV y concretamente en las acuñadas en la ceca de México donde más piezas reselladas en Asia encontramos. El proceso, en apariencia sencillo encierra algunos enigmas dado la multitud de caracteres empleados. Los resellos se aplicaban una vez se había verificado, ley, peso y medida de la moneda. En ese momento se marcaba por el comerciante o banquero mediante un punzón. Es muy común encontrar más de una marca pues este proceso se solía repetir cada vez que la pieza cambiaba de mano, y no sólo eso, sino que con el tiempo también se podían completar con contramarcas dejando en muchas ocasiones piezas difícilmente reconocibles. En cuanto a qué se marcaba, podemos ver tres grandes bloques: caracteres que hacen referencia a la calidad y autenticidad de la pieza, nombres propios y marcas figurativas.
