A pesar de su corto mandato, fue solo emperador romano dos años, entre el 79 y el 81d.C, y de que bajo éste, ocurrieron varias calamidades que han pasado a la historia como la erupción del Vesubio y el gran incendio que asoló Roma, lo cierto es que es un emperador al que la historiografía siempre trató bien: de gran bondad y generosidad gozó de una enorme popularidad entre otras cosas por la labor de reconstrucción que llevó a cabo en la Roma asolada. Respecto a su numismática, en una primera etapa el retrato sigue la línea de su predecesor, Vespasiano, pero después los rasgos parecen dulcificarse un tanto, aunque dentro de un realismo que no perdona, por ejemplo, la cierta contundencia de su físico.
